November 27 The "S" WordWell, it finally happened. I woke up this morning to find... SNOW!
Those of you who know me, will understand that this is NOT a good thing. Yeah, yeah, it's beautiful, yadda, yadda, yadda, but, people drive like idiots in it, especially when it's the first snow of the season.
I hate driving in it, and I hate the idiots who not only endanger their lives but mine.
Here's a tip... Having a 4-wheel drive, what-ever it is, doesn't mean you can't wreck. Bottom line, 4 wheels on black ice or 4 wheels on a slippery road, is just as bad as when a 2 wheel drive is on it. Thing is, YOU think your safe and drive like a fool!
OK, deep breath.... I'm over it now.... lol
When I lived on the other side of the state, which has even more snow and no road maintenance, I saw so many wrecks of 4 wheel drives, and was run off the road more than once by them. I understand road rage.
I'm much better now... Thanks for letting me vent. We return you to your regularly scheduled program. In the event of a real 'Steph hissy fit', you would have been instructed to tune into your local radio station... and listen to some really good music, until said hissy fit was over.
Here's hoping you have a great week, without snow! BIG HUGS, Steph
November 20 Happy Thanksgiving!I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We are having Thanksgiving lunch at my parents house. It's lunch, or technically 11:30am, because my father, a grown man, won't wait to eat the main meal in the evening. (Think, grown man who's used to throwing temper tantrums, and getting his way.)
The other day I was able to buy 2 really big turkeys for approx 30 cents per pound. My next question or polite demand... I want recipes people! Casseroles, soups, chilis... anything and everything that you could use left over turkey. They can be 'old tried and trues' or new ones that you think sound good. Post 'em people!
BIG HUGS, Steph
November 14 It's the first thing to go...It sucks getting older. I know that on the inside I'm a better person than the, "young" Steph, but, well, case in point...
I was in the shower this morning and thought of a really good thing to blog about.
It would be short, to the point and was very witty...
Don't ask me what it was, because the only thing I can remember is that it would be short, to the point and very witty. I've been trying to remember what it was all day. Pfffft....
I have Jan and Dean playing. In keeping with the 'car' theme. I got to see them in concert during the early 80's. I love their music, and the Beach Boys.
At the start of the concert they had a running joke. They started it with saying, what shall we play? Then one of them named... "Fun, Fun, Fun" and the other one would say, "Hey, that's not ours it's the Beach Boys!"
They did that throughout the concert, and played both their songs and some of the Beach Boy's. I guess I wasn't the only one who would get them mixed up. lol
Here's hoping your memory is working better than mine, and the rest of your week is great. BIG HUGS, Steph
P.S., I got a phone call this morning. The girl's basketball teams are heading out of town, to a tournament this weekend. They leave Friday morning. I've been asked to make them one of their favorite treats to take along for the ride. (I make them for when the girls are playing fast pitch softball too.)
So, since I'm making them, I thought I'd share the recipe. WARNING! They are very rich, and personally I can't even eat a whole piece, but, they seem to be irresistible to kids and teens.
Crispy Chocolate Log
1 package (approx 10 oz) mini marshmallows (I think the pkg is 10.5 oz)
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup creamy style peanut butter
5 1/2 cups rice crispies cereal
1 1/3 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup butterscotch chips
Line a 15x10x1 pan with wax paper, and either lightly butter the wax paper, or spray it with butter flavored Pam. Measure 5 and 1/2 cups rice crispies cereal into a large bowl, set aside.
In a large microwave safe bowl, combine the marshmallows, butter, and peanut butter. Cover and microwave on high, 2 minutes. Stir until all is well blended. Pour marshmallow mixture over the rice crispies, and stir until they are well coated and evenly mixed.
Pour out onto the buttered/sprayed wax paper. Lightly butter your fingers and press the rice crispies mixture into a large flat rectangle (size of the pan).
In another microwave safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and butterscotch chips. Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Remove and stir until smooth and spreadable. If 2 minutes isn't enough, try another 20 seconds, but be careful to not over cook them.
Spread the chip mixture onto the rice crispies rectangle to within 1 inch of the edge. Starting with the long side, roll up "jelly roll" style. Peeling wax paper away while rolling. Place seam side down on a serving plate, and refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Cut into 1 inch thick round slices. Yields approx 15/20 slices. ENJOY!
November 13 Pimp yo Ride...Bob, Mr. RUSerious, is having a "Pimp your ride week."
I've posted my 2 main rides, and the rest... well a girl can dream can't she?
When I was 13/14, one of my neighbors had an old Austin Healey sitting in his driveway. I'm not even sure it had an engine, but, just the sight of it was fodder for many a day dream. I was going to buy it from him and lovingly have it restored. The car and I would then live happily ever after! Then we moved away.
Anyone have an extra 65 thou? That's all it would take to get me behind the wheel of an Austin Healey, and for a few "pennies" more, a '61 Jag... I take checks and credit cards... Come on you know you want to! BIG HUGS, (and looking for spare change in your pocket ) Steph November 06 Just Thinking, and a RecipeI've been enjoying these sunny fall days.
It makes me kinda sad to be getting my roses and other garden plants ready for winter, but, I guess that's why I look forward to the coming spring.
Things have been hectic here, and yet, when I sit down to blog, I can't think of a thing to write about!
Ever notice how hard it is to understand a little child when they talk, and yet, when they learn a swear word, there's no mistaking it? The enunciation and volume are beyond perfect! Why is that?
Telling them that they can't use words that you use, doesn't usually work. At least that's what I told my son and Dekeon's mom. If they want their 3 year old to not drop the F bomb, then chances are they will need to stop dropping it around him. They DO listen to what's going on around them ya know! lol
I some times wonder about myself. Case in point... the movie, "Silence of the Lambs" Very scary, great movie, and I admit I find the character of Hannibal Lecter to be very likable, interesting even. Then the other night "Con Air" was on TV. They have a character that is a serial killer on board, Garland Greene, played by Steve Buscemi, and... I like his character. Yet in real life I come from a family of 'bad boys' and have no attraction for real life bad guys.
I have no point, just letting my mind wander.
My older son lives in a neighborhood that has a "pet, mascot, neighborhood ambassador" that's a wild turkey. I got to see him for the first time the other day. I didn't have my camera, but from now on I'm taking it with me. I'll post pics when I get them.
Well, I'm off to make cookies. It's my first installment for the drywall guy. He's going to stop by tonight.
OH, my younger son made me a wonderful dessert the other night, and I thought I'd share it with you.
1 Bottle of a good white wine
2 cinnamon sticks
1 vanilla bean
4 pears, halved and cored
In a saucepan pour the wine and add the cinnamon sticks, and the vanilla bean, which you have cut open and scraped the seeds into the wine, then tossed the bean in too.
(Hope that makes sense)
Poach the pears in the spiced wine. Remove the pears when poached and set aside.
Cook the remaining wine liquid, making a reduction. It should get to a syrup like consistency.
To serve, place a pear half on a plate or shallow bowl. Top with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and top with the wine/pear reduction.
This is soooo good! I hope it all makes sense, he was just told how to do it from a friend who's a chef. If you have any questions, just holler.
November 01 It's November already?I hope everyone had a great Halloween.
I love handing out the candy and seeing the little ones in costume.
My favorite are the ones that are 3-6 yrs old. They are so excited. They love showing me their costume, and I had one little boy about 5, sing me the whole "Trick or Treat" song. You know the one that says, "Trick or Treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat"....
I watched some movies between answering the door. I saw, Spider man 3, and License to Wed.
Spider man 3 was not my favorite of the series, but it was OK. I have a problem with Toby being Spidey. He has a "Jack Nicholson" type of persona. I never really believe that either one is feeling anything real, and Toby would do better in movies where he plays some kind of perverted psycho. He always has this weird look in his eyes. (Just my opinion)
License to Wed, was funny, but, I found myself really wanting to hurt Mandy Moore's character. From an older woman's point of view, she was self centered, controlling and suuuuch a stupid little witch!
Here she has a guy who's easy going and laid back, and she doesn't appreciate it until some of her family and her best friend tell her to. She wasn't even smart enough to come to the conclusion herself.
Robin Williams and the little kid who plays as his 'side-kick' were funny, although, having a Priest being a mentor to a young boy.... well...
The other night I rented, "Transformers" and I liked it. My boys were huge fans and I would watch the cartoons with them. The movie didn't really stick to much from the cartoon, but it was a fun, escapist, blow things up, wise crackin, type movie.
I admit it, some times I enjoy a good mindless, "blowing things up, shooting everything that moves, tough guys who should be dead after the beating they took, but, no, they get up and keep going", type of movies.
On a totally different note...
I finally found a gentleman who does drywall. This house was a rental before we bought it, and had some holes in the walls that my children, animals and grandson have made much bigger (and added a few of their own). This man comes highly recommended and has been in the business for over 30 years.
I finally got him to stop by and take a look at the damage... (and this is what I love about living in a small town) I have about 8 holes to repair, and some of them are huge! I just had my 3 yr old grandson spend the week with me. He not only made some bigger, but, I'm going to have to make sure I get all the toys (food, marbles, lego's, hot wheels, candy, etc. etc...) out of the wall before the guy starts fixing them! lol
He took a look at all of them and told me it would be no problem to get them all fixed.
He then went on to say that IF I was willing to wait and have him work me into his schedule when he could get to them that he would be willing to do them for me in return for me making him some goodies!
I love people who are into the whole barter system. lol
I said YES!
I snagged the video below from DragonBoy. I LOVE these guys (Flight of the Conchords) they are from New Zealand. The second one is an old favorite... you may want to turn it down if there are children around. Enjoy!
Here's hoping everyone has a great week. BIG HUGS, Steph
